The Soul of Tana Toraja
5 Days 4 Nights Trip
Day 1: Bali – Makassar – Tana Toraja (L,D)
After arrival in Makassar your local guide will meet you. All local guides have had a very deep study and understanding of the culture in Tana Toraja. The drive on day one will give you many exciting adventures. You will pass through Bugisland, where you will be able to visit one of the local houses based on piles. You will visit a local dry fish market and on the way there will be made photo stop to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
After lunch in the town of Pare Pare the scenery will change from flat to mountainous areas. The beautiful limestone mountains will give a nice contrast to the green rice fields. Late afternoon you will reach the gate and entrance to Tana Toraja and here you will really be able to see the change in nature. You stay overnight in a nice located hotel, where you will stay for the next couple of nights.
Day 2, 3 and 4: Tana Toraja (B,L,D)
The next couple of days will be filled with adventure. Upon arrival to Tana Toraja your local guide will check out the possibilities for special ceremonies and make the program after this. If you are lucky you will see the biggest of the ceremonies: The day they have the buffalo slaughtering. It can be a very emotional experience, but this ceremony will show the status of the deceased from how many buffaloes there have been slaughtered. There are many other small ceremonies of interest so do not worry.
But apart from all the living adventure, then there are all the sights that always will be there: The many impressive graves. The stone graves in Suaya, The baby graves in Kambira and The Hanging Graves that are situated behind the beautiful village of Ke’te Kesu’. In this village you will be able to look at the Tongkonan Houses, which are the original Torajan Houses. All nice decorated with different patterns, which all have a meaning. The roofs are in shape of a boat and outside the houses you will see the buffalo horns. They show the status of the family.
You will also have the possibility to get close to the local people. Especially in the local markets in Makale and Rantepao. They will be very interested in you as you are in them. This is the beauty of Torajan people. Just be sure to be smiling and show respect for old people.
Day 5: Tana Toraja – Makassar – Bali (B)
Early morning you will return to Makassar and take the flight back to Bali. On the way to the airport you will think back of how much you have experienced in such a short period of time.
